Support for Veterinary Teams

Dr Caroline Allen MA VetMB CertSAM FRCVS with her Bull Lurcher dog, Jess.

A supportive second opinion service- designed to work with you, not around you

As a fellow clinician, I know that a 10–15 minute consultation rarely leaves enough space for the complex, emotionally charged cases- the ones that stay with you after the day is done. Pet Lighthouse exists to help with exactly those moments.

We are an independent, online second opinion service. We don't prescribe, treat, or take over case management. We give your clients the time, depth, and independent perspective they need - and return them to you with clarity, a settled plan, and a stronger sense of trust in the care they're receiving.

How Pet Lighthouse Supports Your Team

I utilise the Five Domains framework to provide holistic welfare assessments that go beyond the clinical diagnosis. By signposting clients to Pet Lighthouse, you can:

  • Diffuse tension: Give clients the time they need to process difficult news, reducing the risk of conflicts, "Dr. Google" misinformation and complaints.

  • Focus on welfare: I help owners move past the "single diagnosis" mindset to focus on their pet’s overall quality of life and tangible welfare improvements.

  • Streamline decision-making: Clients return to your clinic with a clear roadmap, making their future appointments with you more productive and focused.

  • Supporting the vet: client bond: As an independent consultant, I do not prescribe, treat, or take over case management.

.

Expertise Rooted in Clinical Reality

With over 25 years of experience- including 15 years in first-opinion work and 8 years as the RSPCA’s Chief Vet- my guidance is grounded in the practical reality of owners’ lives and the high standards of the profession.

Every consultation concludes with a detailed professional report shared directly with your practice for the patient's records.

What colleagues say

"Caroline has championed the animal's voice throughout her career, helping people understand things from the animal's perspective and supporting them through difficult times. I believe Pet Lighthouse will continue to champion that voice and help guide owners through difficult decisions."

- Justine Shotton FRCVS, Head Vet Wildlife & Exotics, RSPCA. Former BVA President

"With her years of experience as a GP vet, coupled with her standing in the profession as a thoughtful advocate of animal quality of life assessment, I can think of no-one better suited to launch a compassionate service like Pet Lighthouse."

- Sean Wensley FRCVS, vet and animal welfare expert

"Caroline's vast experience in both the private veterinary sector and the charity sector allows her to provide independent expert advice and support in a compassionate way to ensure the best welfare outcome for the animal is achieved."

- Dr Maggie Roberts BVM&S MRCVS, Veterinary Partner, Advovet; former Director of Veterinary Services, Cats Protection

When Pet Lighthouse can help your clients

Pet Lighthouse is particularly valuable for pet owners who are:

  • struggling with pet care decision-making when faced with complex or competing treatment options
  • managing the ongoing care needs of a chronically or seriously unwell pet
  • confronting quality-of-life or end-of-life decisions
  • feeling emotionally overwhelmed and stuck in decision paralysis

We offer a second opinion service that provides in-depth, neutral support, allowing clients to process information, clarify their values, and prepare for more productive conversations with veterinary support.

Many of your clients will already be seeking second opinions in these situations; from friends, from internet groups and other pet owners. Referring to Pet Lighthouse provides reassurance that your clients will receive evidence based, welfare focused, compassionate advice.

Protecting the vet–client relationship

In highly emotional situations, even strong vet–client relationships can become strained. Pet Lighthouse can act as a “release valve”, offering an independent perspective that helps diffuse tension and reduce the risk of conflict or complaints.

Importantly:

  • We do not prescribe or provide treatment
  • We do not take over case management
  • Clients are always encouraged to return to their own vet for ongoing care

Your clinical role remains central.

Our client promise of professionalism

“I will never undermine the relationship you have with your local vet.
Instead, I aim to empower you with the clarity and questions you need to make your future visits more productive and focused.”
- Caroline Allen, Founder, Pet Lighthouse
