Caroline Allen is the founder of Pet Lighthouse and an experienced veterinary surgeon with over 25 years’ experience. She is deeply committed to providing veterinary care that recognises animals as individuals, prioritises their welfare, and honours the profound bond between pets and the people who love them.
After qualifying from the University of Cambridge, Caroline spent more than 17 years working as a small-animal GP vet, during which time she gained the RCVS Certificate in Small Animal Medicine. She later moved into the charity sector, serving for seven years as Chief Veterinary Officer at the RSPCA.
During her time at the RSPCA, Caroline was awarded the Queen Victoria Medal in recognition of her work on quality-of-life assessment. She has written widely and spoken at veterinary conferences on animal welfare, quality of life, euthanasia, ethics, and compassionate veterinary care.
Caroline is passionate about supporting pet owners with thoughtful, evidence-based guidance and is delighted to share her expertise through Pet Lighthouse, helping families make informed, compassionate decisions for their animals while working alongside their own veterinary teams.
In 2025, Caroline was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons in recognition of her contribution to the profession.
Caroline owns a rescue Bull Lurcher, Jess (pictured) who is on behavioural medications and treatment for reactivity and separation anxiety due to her bad start in life. Caroline's previous beloved dog, Tilly, a rescued Staffy, suffered from complex health needs relating to her vision and mobility. Marvin, her first rescue cat, was an amputee. Caroline has deep personal experience of navigating caring for a pet with complex needs.
