You shouldn't feel bad for seeking reassurance.

Many pet owners feel a sense of guilt or disloyalty when considering a second opinion. However, seeking a fresh perspective is a proactive step in ensuring your pet's well-being.

At Pet Lighthouse, we are not here to judge the previous care but rather to offer a comprehensive pet health consultation that provides the time and attention (45+ minutes) that a busy GP clinic simply cannot provide. With over 15 years as a GP vet, I understand the complexities of veterinary practice and how to best support pet owners and their chosen practitioners.

The "Lighthouse" View:

Medicine is intricate. Obtaining a second opinion isn't a reflection of doubt in your vet; it’s about exploring all the options that suit your pet’s unique needs and your family’s circumstances. If you're reading this, it’s clear that you love your pet deeply.

If you find yourself feeling overwhelmed about your pet's health, rest assured you're in the right place for veterinary advocacy.

Navigating Your Care Options: Working With Your Vet and Beyond

Your primary care vet is always your first port of call. They know your pet best and are the foundation of their medical care. However, as your pet’s health journey becomes more complex, you may find yourself needing different types of support to work alongside your local practice. This might involve specialist referral where the focus is on high-level technical expertise.

Specialists have advanced training and qualifications in specific areas, examples include oncology (cancer treatment), orthopaedics (joint and bone conditions and surgery), neurology (disorders of the nervous system including the brain and spine) but specialists exist for all body systems.

Specialists are essential for specific treatments, but they often operate within a single field.

Pet Lighthouse works differently. Rather than focusing on one body system, Dr Caroline Allen looks across the whole animal - how conditions interact, how treatment affects daily life, and what the options really mean for your pet's quality of life and your family's wellbeing. With over 25 years of broad clinical experience, Caroline brings a senior, independent perspective that joins up the dots between the clinical picture and what actually matters to you.

We can sit alongside your GP vet, help you decide whether specialist referral is the right next step, or make sense of options a specialist has already given you. Whatever stage you're at, we're here to give you the clarity and confidence to move forward.

For a more detailed comparison of the different options you’ll find a table at the end of this article.

Why Pet Lighthouse?

Deep experience and knowledge:

Dr Caroline Allen brings senior expertise through 15 years in general practice and eight years as the RSPCA’s Chief Vet. You can find out more about Caroline here: https://petlighthouse.co.uk/about-caroline

Unbiased Advocacy:

Pet Lighthouse is totally independent and provides advice that is totally focused on your pet’s welfare and your family’s needs. Pet Lighthouse does not prescribe or provide treatments ourselves, so there is no financial incentive behind our advice.

Quality of life focus:

Caroline’s experience in developing quality of life assessments at the RSPCA means she is able to look beyond a simple view of your pet’s health and instead review the whole picture. Caroline can refer to other professionals if required, for example for behavioural issues.

Compassion and understanding:

We know what it is like to care for pets with complex health needs. Caroline’s own pets, all rescue’s, have included an amputee cat called Marvin, a blind Staffy called Tilly, who suffered with fear at the vets and developed arthritis and a neurological condition, and her current dog Jess who suffers from reactivity and separation anxiety and is behavioural medication and a modification plan.

  • Multiple conditions: If your pet is struggling with multiple conditions, especially where the treatment for one may impact the treatment for the other, or you are worried about overall quality of life.
  • Treatment and diagnostic options: You have been offered options for tests and/or surgery and you are unsure if this is a good use of your funds and/or whether these are in your pet’s overall best welfare interests.
  • Concerns about treatment side effects:  Concerns about whether the treatment regime is affecting quality of life, or risking future problems
  • Palliative & End-of-Life: If you need advice about “when is the right time” to consider euthanasia to avoid your pet suffering (there will be a future blog on this topic).
  • Chronic conditions: We have advised clients struggling to manage conditions such as diabetes and arthritis, who have wanted to ensure the regime provided the best outcome for their pet while also fitting with their family’s other commitments.
  • Conflicting Advice: When you’ve seen multiple vets and or other pet professionals and need a senior viewpoint to bring clarity to unclear treatment paths or conflicting views.

What Owners Are Saying

Katie was struggling with managing her cat Winnie’s diabetes diagnosis and stabilisation:

“I cannot put into words how much Pet Lighthouse has helped me and my little cat. After a diagnosis of diabetes and months of this not being controlled, I turned to Pet Lighthouse for advice and if what I was doing was best for my cat. Pet Lighthouse treated my case with compassion, empathy and expertise. The whole process was expertly handled and not only was my cat discussed but my well being too, which was something I hadn't really considered before. The whole process was seamless and I cannot thank Pet Lighthouse enough for what they have done for me, I have the re assurance that what I am doing is right for me and my cat. Even though my cat will always have diabetes we are now in a place where her treatment is manageable and she has a good quality of life. Thank you so much Pet Lighthouse for everything you have done for us.

Anna was unsure about the plan for monitoring her cat Baggy’s chronic condition:

“Caroline helped with Baggy, my cat, who has pancreatitis / triaditis. After a recent flare up, we discussed his on-going care program, which was so helpful, and discussed Baggy in detail from his diet to his daily routine. Outlining what with Baggy should be prioritised, Caroline’s experience shines through giving confidence to trust her advice and healthcare recommendations.”

Naomi was worried about the wellbeing of her Labrador, who was suffering from arthritis and some neurological (nerve) issues:

“We recently had a consultation with Dr Caroline Allen at Pet Lighthouse regarding our 13-year-old Labrador and I honestly can’t recommend her highly enough.

Caroline provided a detailed and incredibly thoughtful report following our consultation, part of which she also shared with our vet. As a direct result, our vet contacted us to arrange a review of our dog’s pain management and he is now on additional medication that is already making a noticeable difference.

What really sets Caroline apart is the depth of care and experience she brings. Her guidance goes far beyond the clinical, she helped us think through not only the practical aspects of managing our dog’s declining health, but also how to approach the more difficult conversations as a family. That has been invaluable.

Her report gave us clarity, reassurance and a real sense of direction at a time that can feel quite overwhelming. We now feel much better equipped to make informed, compassionate decisions for our dog in his later years.

Caroline’s expertise and compassion shines through in everything she does. I would wholeheartedly recommend Pet Lighthouse to anyone navigating this stage of their pet’s life.”

How it Works

To provide an expert, evidence-based review, we don't work in a vacuum.

  • Veterinary Notes: We require your pet’s clinical history from your primary vet. This ensures we see the full picture—blood results, imaging, and medication history—so our advice is safe and precise. We will ask for your consent to contact your vets for your notes when we send out our questionnaire prior to the paid consultation.
  • Your vet will not be angry, or upset. In many cases they will welcome another pair of eyes.
  • The questionnaire will also gather data about your pet’s health and broader welfare- encompassing behaviour, environment and nutrition. We can build up a picture of how your pet is feeling and where the opportunities are to enhance positive feelings and minimise negative feelings. We also ask questions about the impact on you and your family.
  • You can find out more about the consultation process here https://petlighthouse.co.uk/your-consultation-1
  • The Goal: We complement your vet’s work. We provide you with the questions to ask and the clarity to move forward with confidence.
  • We don’t prescribe or treat, this is still the role of your primary vet
  • In our experience, vets value the time and assistance that we are able to provide to clients.
