Multiple Health Conditions in Pets

An elderly cat and dog over autumn leaves

Many older pets are living with more than one health problem at the same time. Treating one condition can affect another, and the best choice for one part of your pet may not be the best choice for the whole animal.

When your pet's health doesn't fit in a single system or specialism it can feel complicated and overwhelming. The worry that you are doing the "wrong thing" can be paralysing. We are here to help you navigate through the confusion.

This series looks at the most common combinations, from kidney disease and arthritis to heart disease, liver changes and dementia. Each post focuses on what matters most for your pet's quality of life, and how to weigh the risks and benefits of treatment with your vet.

I've written this post about the general principles that sit behind my approach to managing multiple conditions, or what we call comorbidities: Managing Multiple Conditions

It explains why quality of life comes first, how to think about the risks and benefits of medication, and why supplements come with a health warning of their own.

For more on medicines, read Is Pet Medication Safe?

And for more on the principles behind diagnostic testing read my Pet Diagnostic Test Guide.
